Impact of Climate Change on Virtual and Green Water Availability in Arid Regions

Research Idea :
Impact of Climate Change on Virtual and Green Water Availability in Arid Regions

Suitable EIS Journals for Publication of the Findings of this research

International Journal of Hydro-Climatic Engineering

International Journal of Water and Informatics

International Journal of Watershed Management

Pre-requisite :
Hydro-metereological, Future Climate and Water Use Data, Knowledge about Predictive Hydrologic Models.

Justification of the Study :
Virtual Water is the amount of water used in industries as raw material and Green Water is the volume of water utilized in agriculture. The availability of both of them is important for socio-economic development of any region. As arid regions are characterized by water scarcity, such places will be more vulnerable to climate change impacts. As this two type of water use is important for GDP of any region maintaining a minimum water volume for the said purposes will be important.

Brief Methodology :
After collecting the relevant data, a meta-heuristic model can be prepared to predict the surface runoff. Commonly used hydrologic Models like HECHMS or an entirely new model can be developed by various meta-heuristic methods for estimation of the runoff and corresponding availability of virtual and green water can be derived by applying the water budget equation and the demand data collected from the study area.

The special issue entitled “Optimization of Water Energy Nexus by Soft Computation and Hierarchical Decision Making Methods” in the Journal of Water and Energy Nexus.
This journal is a new journal which is published from Energy in Style Publishers.Although this is a new journal but it is not a paid or predatory journal and perform extensive peer reviews before allowing an article to be published in the journal. The Abstract and other details of the Special Issue is as given below :

In any operational systems both water and energy is utilized for sustenance of the benefits received from the system. The nexus of water and energy and their inter dependency and cognitive utilization of the mutuality between the two basic essentials of mankind ensure the success of the system, which become evident from the output received from the setup.

According to Gupta(2014),“Water and energy are closely interconnected and choices made in one sector affects the other, positively or negatively”. The interrelationship of this two resources are highly significant and symbiosis between the two must be in such a manner that the benefit become mutual. A shortage of water can inhibit energy production since power plants in the United States withdraw 143 billion gallons of fresh water every day, more than the amount withdrawn for irrigation and three times as much as is used for public water supplies(GRACE,2017). A shortage of water readily available to a power plant can also result in more energy being used to pump water from faraway sources or from deeper wells.

According to the Energy Department’s new report (ENERGY,2014) water scarcity, variability and uncertainty are becoming more prevalent, potentially leading to vulnerabilities within the U.S. energy system. Changes brought on by population growth, technological advances and policy developments are increasing the urgency for informed action.’

“The inter-dependencies between our water and energy systems are clear — and becoming more prominent.”

Thus the mismanagement of any one will result in uncertainty and decreases the quality of the output; both in terms of efficiency and cost. Currently various optimization techniques and multi criteria decision making methods are implemented to find solutions for the maximum utilization of water as well as energy potential such that the sustainability of the entire framework can be ensured.

This special issue, tries to highlight the indigenous and innovative works on this field of research which mainly showcase the optimal solutions for maximum utilization of both the resources satisfying various cost and maintenance constraints.

Original research works which have utilized the advantages of the clever algorithms (like Ant Colony, Artificial Bee Hive, Particle Swarm etc.)  to find the optimal solution from the water and energy nexus will be accepted for review and the approved works will be published in the special issue.

Conference on Engineering Science in Regional Language

This information is shared only due to the uniqueness of the conference where the organizers are allowing submission of unpublished research works in the native language of the author. That means if the author is Bengali he/she can submit a paper in Bengali language.Such type of conference are rare and its suppose to be the second such attempts in India.

More and relevant details are given as below :

National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra, is organizing a conference since 2017. This year conference “भारतीय भाषाओं में तृतीय अंतर्राष्ट्रीय विज्ञान संगोष्ठी” (BBAVS-2019) provides a platform to communicate Scientific and Technological discoveries in Indian Languages.

The idea is to improve the availability of the scientific content in most easy and precise language. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the terminology in English while the main grammar and sentence structure is taken from regional/Indian languages.

About the conference: Some faculty members of NIT, Kurukshetra is going to convene the conference 3rd time in five Indian languages but not limited to the languages Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Punjabi, and Bengali. The 1st conference was successfully held in Aug, 2017 which accepted abstracts in Hindi language and proceedings were published. The second conference happened in 21 December 2018.

Application of Nature Based Optimization Techniques in Optimizing Water Used in Renewable Energy Systems

Water and energy Nexus can save the world

The engineering advancements and burgeoning population have aggravated the requirements of energy. As the typical fuel resources are limited, the recent trend of energy demand has enforced concerns on the availability of fossil based fuels. The disturbance in the price of crude oil is one of the effect of this growing demand. That is why the renewable energy systems like hydro power, solar, wind, wave, tidal etc. has become a topic of concern and research. The common objective is the maximization of conversion efficiency and reduction of the expenses for the conversion. However, in most of the previous studies it was found that the function of water in enhancing productivity and decreasing cost is ignored. The novel and successful application of nature mimicking algorithms like Ant Colony,Artificial Bee,Particle Swarm Optimization in recent years has been used to identify optimal scenarios which can minimize the water requirement maintaining the balance between water used and energy produced. There by creating the water-energy nexus, utilization of water in renewable energy systems can be optimized.

Benefit of the Study : The proposed investigation can reduce the wastage of resources and may maximize the utilization of the natural resources in an objective manner.

Research Idea : Application of Artificial Intelligence on Real Time Monitoring of Crop Water Requirement

The objective of the idea is to apply the concept of artificial intelligence to develop a software which can monitor the crop watering requirement for a agricultural field. The software will take inputs like amount of rainfall, soil moisture and evapo-transpiration and will predict the crop water available. The wilting point will be estimated with respect to the crop being harvested based on the minimum value of the same three parameters required for the harvesting of the selected crop .The software will be trained with a set of scenarios representing all the possible situations and with the help of cognitive modeling architectures like Artificial or Polynomial Neural Networks.Once the model has learned the problems from the scenarios the same is applied for prediction of crop water availability which will be compared with the minimum crop water requirement for the selected crop and thus the water requirement at that instant can be decided. If the soil moisture, rainfall and evapo-transpiration can be measured by automated instruments then the data can be fed real time to the software for prediction and comparison of crop water requirement. The output signal can be sent to the tank where additional water is stored such that the water can be supplied to mitigate the watering requirement at that instant.

Scientific Benefit : This adaptive tool can solve the problem of crop wilting and can also save cost,man-hour and energy due to its automated infrastructure.

Prerequisite : Concept of Artificial Neural Networks/Polynomial Neural Networks and Artificial Intelligence
